Biography

Monica was born in El Paso, and was raised in Juarez. Despite being from a large family she considers herself a shy, reserved person. This duality in her personality translates into how she interprets themes in her art. These include comedic social commentary on Christianity and the Bible, as well as personal stories using animals- namely, pigs to represent the negative side of the narrative. She uses these symbols to begin to tell a story but leaves its true meaning unclear, allowing the viewer to think about what it could really mean.

This method of storytelling began to develop when one of her professors encouraged her to explore topics that were really relevant to her. This is where Monica was challenged to explore herself instead of just creating art for the sake of art. From this point, her passion was directed at depicting narratives with animal as religious symbols in surreal, colorful landscapes.
