Zeke Peña /// Agua Frontera
For this border artist, rasquachismo transforms the forgotten, spaces and landscapes that have been forgotten or overlooked, as the desert, the Rio Grande and the Rio Bravo. Zeke’s work is a reminder of the importance of transforming these objects and places left in oblivion, to create a sense of community not only for the present but for future generations.
Artwork have been created over a few pieces of wood, and are based on history and intimate memories of those who at one time had lived but today have been lost or have died during their expeditions to the border deserts. Water jugs, some empty and some filled with water remind us that without it we cannot survive. With the support and the collective participation of the community, these jugs have been transformed with written messages, prints and manuscripts which serve as offerings for those who have fled, he likes to quench their thirst and their journeys north.
With this exhibition we break the borders between two cities, El Paso and Juarez. Instead of seeing the river as a division, we treat it as a connection. Mutual cooperation and the flow of people between the two cities is something that was created with this exhibition.
